As a Microsoft Software Engineer, I frequently hear the question, “What is OMS and why should I care?” Microsoft Operations Management Suite is a free-to-use tool provided by Microsoft, hosted in the Azure cloud.  OMS was released last year and is continuing to develop and add new functionality, with Office 365 Analytics leading the pack of new solutions. OMS combines log analytics and the standard Best Practice Analyzer, available in Windows Server, into an easy to consume dashboard in the cloud. OMS does not replace the need, though, for traditional system monitoring tools, but can be a bolt-on to what you currently have, and is agnostic to where your servers live. Because OMS is agent based, you have multiple options for where you manage your servers- in your datacenter, Azure, AWS, etc.

OMS was designed to be easy to use and easy to setup.  To create a free account, go to www.microsoft.com/oms and click “Create a Free Account”

 
 
 

The setup requires you to sign in using your Microsoft account. If you are using Office 365, this would be your email address hosted in the cloud. You will then be directed to a page to fill in information about the workspace in which you will be managing your content. Each account can manage multiple workspaces.

Once you are signed into your new workspace, the wizard will walk you through adding solutions, installing agents, and adding logs to analyze.

Solutions are where OMS shines. Clicking the “Solutions Gallery” will show a screen where you can click and add solutions to your workspace

As solutions are added to your workspace, the agents installed on your servers are then instructed to send configuration and log data relating to items the solution includes.

Adding a solution is as simple as clicking the solution you want and clicking the “Add” button.

 

The solution will then show up on your home page.

 
 

You can add an agent by clicking the “Settings” tile and then clicking on “Connected Sources”. 

You can then download the agent that matches the OS and bit version of your server.  The agent install requires the Workspace ID and Primary Key to connect it to the cloud. Regenerating the keys breaks any existing agent connections and requires the new keys to be installed to reconnect to the cloud.

Under the “Data section”, specific event logs, performance metrics and syslog data can be added for monitoring.

 

To add an event log, just start typing the name of the log from the server.

 
 

Click the “+” and select the event types to send.  Click “Save” at the top left.

 
 

All content being sent then is available by clicking the “Search” icon on the left

 
 

Each OMS solution adds its own search queries that it uses to present the data in the ties.  These queries can then be copied and modified to suite your own needs.
